The gut microbiome landscape spans a diverse range, from well-characterized isolates to complex native communities and probiotic-augmented systems. In this webinar, we will explore practical approaches for studying these systems, with an emphasis on culturing and characterizing fastidious anaerobic organisms using established microbiology workflows.
We’re excited to be joined by guest speaker Dr. Jonathan Chapman of Newcastle University, who will discuss findings from his study published in BMC Microbiology "Characterising the metabolic functionality of the preterm neonatal gut microbiome prior to the onset of necrotising enterocolitis: a pilot study", including his use of Biolog’s phenotypic profiling technologies.
Building on this real-world research application, this webinar will also explore broader strategies for mapping functional metabolism across a range of gut microbiome systems. We will illustrate how phenotypic profiling can be applied to assess microbial metabolism and substrate utilization, and how these data can be integrated with complementary omics approaches to deliver deep mechanistic insights. Finally, we will discuss how functional characterization of the gut microbiome can inform our understanding of host–microbiome interactions and their broader relevance to human health.

Jonathan Chapman, Ph.D.
Research Associate, Stewart Lab, Translational and Clinical Research Institute, Newcastle University
Dr. Jonathan Chapman completed his undergraduate and Masters degrees in Biochemistry at the University of Sheffield, before then joining the lab of Professor Jeff Errington at Newcastle University, where he undertook a Ph.D. investigating natural product-mediated host-pathogen interactions. In 2022, he joined the lab of Professor Chris Stewart, in his current position as a Post Doctoral Research Associate. Jon’s research in the Stewart lab focuses on investigating gut microbiome-diet-host interactions underpinning health and disease in preterm infants. He uses patient-derived intestinal organoid models and multi-omics approaches to address both basic science and translational research questions. His most recent published work in Nature Microbiology studied the impact of human milk oligosaccharide-utilising Clostridium species on the preterm infant host and associated gut microbiota community.

Juan Sanchez holds a B.S. in Chemistry and an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso. He has also earned an M.B.A. from the Quantic School of Business and Technology. As a former Stanford Scientist, he co-authored several gut microbiome publications featured in Nature and Cell. His professional interests include cell culture, metabolomics, and the gut microbiome.
